The KGFS Household Dataset includes a baseline census of 4,207 households, and an endline follow-up with 4,184 of these households. This data was collected as part of the KGFS project, which used a cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the economic impact of expanding financial access in rural India. The analysis final sample included 4,160 households located across 870 villages in three districts - Ariyalur, Pudukkottai and Thanjavur - in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. All households were located within 100 new service zones slated to receive a new KGFS branch. Surveying occurred alongside branch expansion. For baseline, data collection occurred in three rounds between 2010 and 2014; for endline, data collection occurred in three rounds between 2013 and 2016. Within each household, up to two household members were interviewed; the household head or the spouse of the household head and a married woman in the household. Modules in both the baseline and endline surveys include: household income and assets; outstanding and repaid loans, savings accounts and any insurance products; household members’ occupation and employment (wage labor or self-employment), and business outcomes (business sales and employment in the business). The survey instruments also included a module to measure female empowerment, subjective well-being, and to assess women’s physical health status through information on women’s weight, anemia, and blood pressure.
In addition to these modules, we collected hair samples from 3,241 eligible women during endline data collection.
