The Role

Yale Department of EconomicsYale Economic Growth Center, and Inclusion Economics at Yale University seek undergraduates with writing and communications skills and strong economics coursework to serve as Economics Writing & Communications Interns for Summer 2024. Part- and full-time internships are available based in New Haven with the possibility of remote work. Successful candidates will write about current research in economics and assist the Department and centers with their communications projects. They will also have the opportunity to attend faculty and graduate student talks, programming workshops, and social events that teach economics research skills and help build community with undergraduate RAs working with faculty on summer projects.

Successful candidates will conduct interviews and independent research, and write articles directed toward the public (via profiles, op-eds, and blogs), academic audiences (research summaries), and policymakers (policy briefs). Daily tasks will also include writing website copy and assisting in activities concerning economics and policy research, including website building, event planning, working on multimedia platforms, researching contacts, building databases and mailing lists, and assisting with the administrative needs of the communications team. The Department and centers host dynamic research portfolios that allow for creativity and growth, and tasks may change as agendas develop over the summer.

Economics Writing & Communications Interns will be matched with the areas of interest:

  • The Department of Economics writing projects will cover a wide range of macro- and microeconomic research, economic theory, and U.S. domestic policy. The Intern will have the opportunity to contribute significantly to the Department of Economics Annual Magazine, for which they would be credited as a primary author.
  • The Economic Growth Center writing projects will cover research on data-driven insights for policy in low- and middle-income countries – as well as special focus on gender, markets, international trade, and climate policy. The goal is to convey research insights for policy to improve lives in developing countries.
  • Inclusion Economics at Yale University writing projects will cover research on issues of inclusion across the broad categories of governance and social protection, environmental justice, gender, and economic opportunity. Interns may also support ongoing research by teams in India and Nepal.

Our internships offer an opportunity to work with Yale economics faculty and visitors, also receive coaching in writing and editing, and participate in a vibrant community of interns, RAs, postgraduate fellows, and researchers. The interns will author articles to be published on Yale websites and external outlets, and also produce uncredited writing (e.g. website copy and contributions to articles by others).

We invite applications from people of diverse backgrounds, particularly women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, persons with disabilities, and others who have been historically underrepresented in the field of economics. Yale is an Affirmative Action Equal Opportunity Employer, and values diversity in its faculty, students, and staff.
