A historical view of subway construction in New York City, 1913 New York Public Library

How have economies developed across time and place? How do historical institutions shape our current economic challenges?

The Program in Economic History supports research on the long-run development of economies through empirical analysis, economic theory, and the study of institutions and historical context.

Economic history studies the long-run development of economies using historical evidence, economics, econometrics, and institutional analysis to understand how past developments shape present-day economic challenges.

The Program in Economic History, housed within the Economic Growth Center, supports research and sponsors workshops, conferences, and related activities.

The Director of the Program is Leah Boustan (leah.boustan@yale.edu).

Yale does not offer a separate PhD in economic history. Students affiliated with the program pursue doctoral degrees in economics, history, or related disciplines and complete the requirements of their home departments.
