Q&A: Rohini Pande on the path to a unified global carbon market

Following her presentation at COP30, EGC Director Rohini Pande sat down for a discussion on her work charting a path to a global system for managing carbon emissions.

At the request of the COP30 leadership, Rohini Pande, the Henry J. Heinz II Professor of Economics at Yale and Director of the Economic Growth Center, chaired a working group tasked with informing a unified market for carbon emissions. In a conversation with Yale’s Kevin Dennehy, she explained how the current fractured system excludes many developing nations with nature-based opportunities and green energy potential from trading markets in wealthy countries. They discussed how her group used principles of economics and insights from recent research to inform recommendations for a unified market with a path to global net zero. During the COP30 conference, a new coalition of 18 countries including China and the EU announced a plan for a unified emissions trading market based on many of those principles.
