Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg Awarded 2025 A.SK Social Science Award
The award recognizes social scientists who have made important contributions to the analysis of political and economic reforms.
Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg, the William Nordhaus Professor of Economics and Global Affairs, has been awarded the 2025 A.SK Social Science Award by the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. The award, given every two years, honors social scientists who have made important contributions to the analysis of political and economic reforms. As the announcement explains:
Her research covers the fields of international trade, development economics, and industrial economics. Goldberg's research findings are more relevant than ever, as her latest work deals with the trend toward protectionism. She demonstrated that the trade war between the US and China has created net export opportunities for many ‘bystander’ countries, rather than simply shifting trade between the target locations. In another paper, she analyzed how the recent shift toward protectionism in the US is affecting income distribution. Goldberg was able to show that workers in the export-oriented sector in strongly Republican districts were most affected by retaliatory tariffs. Goldberg's current work also focuses on the role of intellectual property rights and women's labor market participation in economic growth in developing countries.
Prior awardees include the late James Scott of Yale, along with economists Esther Duflo, Raj Chetty, and Daron Acemoğlu. Professor Goldberg, who also previously served as Chief Economist of the World Bank, shared her reaction to the award: “I am truly honored to receive the A.SK Social Science Award from the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, whose commitment to outstanding scholarship and societal relevance has always been an inspiration. To be counted among its past recipients—many of whom have long been personal heroes—is both humbling and deeply meaningful."
